It is designed to prepare students for apprenticeships and jobs in the building industry.
During the course, students will learn important skills such as safety rules, how to communicate on a worksite, basic maths for construction, and how to use tools correctly. The course also includes hands-on projects to help students practice real carpentry work.
The programme is made up of two parts:
- Safety and Compliance (30 credits): Students will learn about health and safety rules and how to follow workplace regulations in the construction industry.
- Project Planning & Implementation (90 credits): Students will learn how to plan and complete construction projects. They will practice using tools, measuring materials, and building structures.

Some students may choose to continue their studies and complete a Level 4 certificate, such as the New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4)
Past graduates of this programme have also gone on to take the Construction Trade Skills (Paint & Plaster) Level 3 course to boost their skills in another area of construction.
You will learn
In this carpentry course, you’ll build the skills you need to work safely and confidently in construction. You’ll learn how to follow safety rules on a worksite and communicate clearly with your team and others in the trade. You’ll also learn to read and understand building plans and use basic maths to help you complete projects accurately.
As well as this, you’ll focus on carpentry skills and knowledge. Learning about different building materials like timber, concrete, and steel. You’ll become familiar with construction and installation work, as well as important carpentry tools and terms.
Next, you’ll practice joining techniques and learn how to plan and build in the right order. Finally, you’ll develop the skills to check and report on your work, from the first stages of construction to the final finishing touches.
