Construction Trade Skills (Paint and Plaster) Level 3

Build your skills in painting and plastering, including workplace safety, communication, and painting & plastering terms, as well as practical experience in our ‘on the job’ learning environment.
This hands-on course covers important industry practices like workplace safety, teamwork, and understanding building plans.
Students will learn through practical projects that prepare them for real jobs in the industry. By the end of the course, they will have the skills and confidence to start entry-level work or an apprenticeship in painting and plastering.
The programme is made up of two parts, to ensure students gain a solid foundation in painting and plastering:
- Safety and Compliance (30 credits): Students will learn how to work safely on-site by following health and safety rules, spotting hazards, and using the right protective gear. They will also understand industry standards and how to make sure their work meets building rules.
- Project Planning & Implementation (30 credits): This topic teaches students how to read and understand building plans, measure materials correctly, and organize tasks to finish projects well. They will also practice painting and plastering skills and learn how to plan and complete construction tasks step by step.

After finishing this course, students will be ready for entry-level jobs in painting and plastering. They may work as painting or plastering apprentices or labourers.
They will have the skills to work with some supervision, including knowledge of health and safety, trade mathematics, hand tools, and construction projects.
Some students may choose to continue their studies and complete a Level 4 certificate, such as the New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4) or the New Zealand Certificate in Painting and Decorating (Level 4) They may also choose to a Level 4 qualification in joinery, or another construction related allied trade.
You will learn
In this Paint & Plaster Level 3 course you’ll learn painting and plastering terms and concepts, helping you prepare for and complete projects with confidence. You’ll also learn how to identify and use the right tools and materials for different tasks and apply them in real projects. By the end of the course, you’ll have hands-on experience working on painting and plastering projects, giving you the practical skills needed to start your career in the trade.
Alongside these skills, you’ll learn how to work safely in a trade environment by following health and safety rules, identifying hazards, and using the right protective gear. You’ll also develop communication skills to work effectively with others on-site, ensuring tasks are completed smoothly. Understanding specifications and drawings will help you follow project plans correctly, and you’ll gain confidence in making calculations needed to measure and estimate materials.
