Foundation Skills in Health & Wellbeing Level 2

Kickstart your journey towards a career in health & wellbeing.

Set your goals, plan your pathway, and build your skills in health and wellbeing with the hands-on Foundation Skills in Health & Wellbeing programme.

Work with a team, improve your communication and problem-solving skills, and gain valuable industry knowledge with support from our navigators every step of the way.

This programme helps students learn the basics of health and wellbeing. The course covers important skills like workplace safety, communication, and basic health knowledge.

Students will take part in practical activities that prepare them for entry-level jobs or further study in the health and wellbeing sector.

The programme is made up of two parts:

  1. Pathways and Goals (35 credits): Students will explore career options in health and wellbeing. They will set personal learning goals, gain an understanding of employer expectations, and prepare for future employment or further study.
  2. Projects (25 credits): Students will take part in practical learning activities related to health and wellbeing. They will apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios, developing problem-solving and teamwork skills.
To enrol in this course appplicants must be between 16-24 years old, and a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident.

After completing this course, graduates will have the basic skills needed for entry-level jobs in health and wellbeing.

They may find work as a healthcare assistant, community support worker, or caregiver.

Graduates will be able to work under supervision, following health and safety rules, using basic care techniques, and communicating well in different health settings.

This qualification can also help them move on to further study in health and wellbeing or related fields.

You will learn

In this Foundation Skills in Health & Wellbeing course, you’ll learn how to find and understand information about health and wellbeing. Exploring how culture and other factors affect people’s health. You’ll also learn how to judge whether information is useful and how to share your research in a clear and simple way.

You’ll think about your experiences with different people, cultures, and communities and how these experiences shape health and wellbeing. Next, you’ll set career goals and explore different job options in the health and wellbeing sector.

This course includes hands-on activities, where you’ll work in a team on health and wellbeing tasks and case studies. You’ll use problem-solving and reading skills to understand challenges and find solutions.

Some of our Level 3 courses offer part-time study options. Our Level 1 and Level 2 courses are only available for full-time study.

The only course which currently offers a combination of in-person and online learning is our Part-time Construction Trade Skills (Carpentry) Level 3. This is because the course was designed for people who are working full time who are only available on evenings and weekends.

You can work as a healthcare assistant or support worker, or continue studying in specialised healthcare fields.
